How to Boost Home Wi-Fi Speed: 15 Fixes That Really Work
You pay for 100 Mbps, yet video calls freeze, and the bedroom TV keeps buffering. Before you blame the ISP or rush out to buy a new router, check one thing. In most homes, the slowdown happens between the router and your device, not on the internet line.
This guide helps you find the real problem and fix it in the right order: free tweaks first, cheap upgrades next, new hardware last. It’s written for Indian homes, with thick concrete walls, crowded apartment blocks and frequent power cuts.
Quick answer: Test with a LAN cable first. If the wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi is slow, do these in order: restart the router, move it to a central, open, elevated spot, use 5 GHz for nearby devices, set a clean channel, and update the firmware. If a far room is still weak, run a cable there and add a wired access point or mesh unit. Replace the router only if it is old, 2.4 GHz-only or has 100 Mbps ports.

Fix 1: Restart the Router and ONT Properly
Unplug the power adapter of both the router and the ONT (the fibre box). Wait 30 seconds and plug them back in. This clears temporary glitches and takes two minutes.
Do not press the tiny reset pinhole. That is a factory reset, and it wipes your Wi-Fi name, password and ISP settings.
Fix 2: Move the Router to a Better Spot
Placement is the single biggest free fix. Wi-Fi is radio, and everything between the router and your phone weakens it.
Do this:
- Place the router in the centre of the home, not in the corner nearest the ISP’s cable entry
- Keep it 1 to 1.5 metres high, on a shelf or wall mount
- Keep it in the open, not inside a cupboard or TV unit
- Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones and Bluetooth speakers

A tip most guides miss: ISPs usually install the fibre box where the cable enters your home. That is rarely the best Wi-Fi spot. If your ONT and router are separate, run a LAN cable from the ONT to a central location and put the router there. If they are one combined box, put your own router or access point in the centre and connect it with a cable.
Fix 3: Use the Right Band (5 GHz for Close, 2.4 GHz for Far)
Most dual-band routers offer two networks. Each has a different job.
- 5 GHz: faster and cleaner, but shorter range. Best for phones, laptops and TVs in the same or next room.
- 2.4 GHz: slower and more crowded, but travels further. Best for far rooms and simple smart devices.
Give each band its own name, such as Home-5G and Home-2G. Then connect your main devices to the 5 GHz one. If a phone keeps clinging to 2.4 GHz, “forget” the network and rejoin the 5 GHz one.
Some older ISP routers are 2.4 GHz-only. If you don’t see a 5 GHz network at all, that’s likely the reason your Wi-Fi feels slow. Ask your ISP for a dual-band replacement, or use your own router.
Fix 4: Pick a Clean Channel and the Right Channel Width
In crowded neighbourhoods, many routers fight over the same radio channels. That slows everyone down.

On 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6 and 11 are the only ones that don’t overlap, and this holds only at 20 MHz width. On 5 GHz, an 80 MHz width is a good balance for most homes. Wider channels sound faster, but in a crowded building they usually pick up more interference.
Some 5 GHz channels (roughly 52–144) are “DFS” channels. They can be cleaner, but the router may briefly switch away if it detects radar. If you see random disconnects, avoid them.
Newer routers usually pick a decent channel automatically. Set it manually only if you see a problem. To see what your neighbours use, install a Wi-Fi analyser app on Android or Windows. iPhones can’t show full channel scans, so use your router’s own app or a laptop instead.
Fix 5: Update the Router Firmware
Old firmware causes real speed and stability problems, not only security gaps. Log in to your router (or open its app), find the firmware or system update option, and install the latest version. Turn on automatic updates if your router offers them.
Fix 6: Find and Stop Bandwidth Hogs
One busy device can slow the whole network. Open your router’s connected-devices list and look for the heavy users.
Common culprits:
- Phone cloud backups and photo uploads
- App and game updates
- Windows or console downloads
- Two or three TVs streaming 4K at once
- CCTV and smart cameras uploading video
- Torrents running in the background

Fix 7: Turn On QoS for Video Calls and Work
QoS (Quality of Service) tells the router which traffic matters most. Put your work laptop or video-call device at the top. Then a big download elsewhere won’t freeze your meeting.
One caution. On some budget routers, QoS lowers the peak speed. Test before and after you turn it on.
Fix 8: Secure Your Wi-Fi and Kick Out Freeloaders
An open or weakly protected network can attract neighbours who eat your bandwidth. It’s also a security risk.
- Use WPA3 if available, or WPA2-AES at minimum
- Set a strong, unique password (not your phone number)
- Turn off WPS
- Check the connected-devices list for devices you don’t recognise
If you find strangers, change the Wi-Fi password and reconnect only your own devices.
Fix 9: Fix the Device, Not Just the Router
Sometimes the router is fine, and the device is the problem.
- Update the Wi-Fi driver on your laptop.
- On Windows, set the adapter’s power-saving mode to Maximum Performance (Power Options → Wireless Adapter Settings)

A TV, desktop, gaming console or set-top box doesn’t need Wi-Fi. Connect them with a LAN cable. This is often the cheapest big speed boost, and it also frees up Wi-Fi capacity for phones and laptops.
Use a Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and keep it away from power cables. Long runs should use a good-quality cable.

Fix 12: Keep Smart-Home Gadgets Off the Main Network
Smart plugs, bulbs and cameras are small, but they add up. Many of them work only on 2.4 GHz. Put them on the 2.4 GHz network or a guest network so they don’t clutter your fast one.

If one room stays weak, cable is your friend. There are two low-cost ways.
- Wired access point (best): run a LAN cable to the far room and connect a second router in access-point mode. Turn off its DHCP, give it the same Wi-Fi name and password, and it acts as a second Wi-Fi point.
- Powerline adapters: these send the network signal through your home’s electrical wiring. They can work well, but results vary. Homes with several distribution boards or different phases may see poor results, so buy from a seller with a return option.

Fix 14: Use a Range Extender the Right Way (Last Resort)
A wireless extender repeats your existing signal. It is the cheapest fix and the most often disappointing one. Many extenders cut speed roughly in half because they receive and resend on the same radio.
If you must use one:
- Place it halfway, where the router’s signal is still good, not in the dead spot itself
- Choose a dual-band model, ideally with an Ethernet port
- Don’t expect it to fix a very weak signal, because it only repeats what it receives

Fix 15: Replace or Add a Router (When It’s Actually Needed)

- It struggles with 20+ devices

The order matters. Placement, band choice and cables beat most gadgets, and they cost little or nothing.
Wi-Fi 6E and the New 6 GHz Option in India
This is new, and most older guides miss it. In January 2026, India’s Department of Telecommunications de-licensed half of the 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi and other low-power wireless use. The lower part (5925–6425 MHz) is now free to use, while the upper part is reserved for future mobile services.
For you, this means Wi-Fi 6E and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 routers can now use their 6 GHz radio in India. It is the cleanest lane, which helps a lot in apartment blocks where the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are packed. The catch is the short range and the need for a compatible phone or laptop.
If you have 6 GHz-capable devices and a compatible router, put those devices on the 6 GHz network when they’re in the same room as the router. Keep 2.4 GHz for simple smart-home gadgets.
Special Situations
Apartments with many neighbouring networks
Dozens of routers in one building crowd the 2.4 GHz band badly. Move your important devices to 5 GHz (or 6 GHz if supported). Pick a clean channel, and try 40 MHz width on 5 GHz if 80 MHz gives poor stability.
Two- and three-storey homes
Wi-Fi travels sideways better than it travels through slabs. One router in a ground-floor corner will struggle upstairs. Use an Ethernet cable to feed a second access point or mesh unit on the upper floor. That is far better than a wireless extender.
Working from home and video calls
Stability matters more than headline speed. Use a LAN cable for your work laptop if you can. Turn on QoS, keep your device on 5 GHz, and pause heavy downloads during calls. Upload speed and ping matter here too, so check them in the speed test.
Smart TV buffering
TVs often have weak Wi-Fi hardware. Connect the TV by cable, or move it to the 5 GHz network. If the TV is far from the router, a wired access point near it works better than an extender.
Homes with 30+ devices
A single old router can choke. A router with a stronger processor and Wi-Fi 6, or a mesh system, handles this better. Also move smart-home devices to a separate network, as in Fix 12.
When It’s Not Your Wi-Fi
If your wired speed is also slow, the problem lies upstream. Common reasons:
- Peak-hour congestion in your area, usually evenings
- A data cap or FUP limit on your plan
- A faulty line, ONT or connector
- An outdated ONT or router that can’t handle your plan speed
Note down your wired results with timestamps and screenshots. Then contact your ISP with that evidence. It makes the complaint much harder to dismiss.
