Avast vs Bitdefender vs Kaspersky for Android: Which One Should You Pick in India?
A WhatsApp message says you have an unpaid traffic challan. There is a file attached. One tap later, your bank OTPs are heading to a stranger.
This is not a made-up scenario. India’s CERT-In issued an alert on 17 March 2026 about a fake RTO and e-Challan app campaign built to steal financial data. That is why the antivirus question matters again for Android users here.
In this context, three names come up most often. They are Avast, Bitdefender and Kaspersky. I compared them using the latest independent lab results, their real Android features, Indian pricing and the trust questions people actually ask. Here is what stands out.
Quick Answer: Which Android Antivirus Is Best?
- Best paid all-rounder: Bitdefender Mobile Security
- Best free option: Avast, if you can live with ads
- Strong detection and handy extras, with a trust point: Kaspersky
All three scored top marks in the latest independent tests. So detection alone will not settle this. Features, price and how comfortable you feel with the company matter more.
Do You Really Need an Antivirus on Android?
Not always. But India’s threat mix makes a good security app a smart extra layer for many people.
Google Play Protect already scans apps on your phone. In India, Google also runs “enhanced fraud protection”. It blocks installs from browsers, messaging apps and file managers when an app asks for SMS, notification or accessibility permissions. Google’s own analysis found that over 95% of installs of fraud malware using those permissions came from sideloaded sources.
That helps a lot, but it is not perfect. When we tested the feature with more than 30 malicious apps, it stopped most of them. Some predatory loan apps still got through.
The bigger problem is trickery. The CERT-In alert described files named things like RTO Challan.apk and MParivahan.apk.
Once installed, such malware can ask for SMS and phone permissions, run quietly in the background and show fake banking screens. State cybercrime units, including Himachal Pradesh’s CID, have issued similar warnings.

A security app is worth it if you:
- Install APK files from outside the Play Store
- Use banking and UPI apps on the same phone
- Share a phone with family members who tap on forwarded links
- Want anti-theft tools or scam call blocking
- Use an older phone that gets few updates

What Independent Labs Say in 2026
AV-Comparatives published its Mobile Security Review 2026 in June, after testing in May. Bitdefender caught 100% of the malicious apps. Kaspersky caught 99.9%. Avast scored 99.6%, a result shared with AVG and Norton because all three use the Avast engine. All three earned the Approved award.
AV-TEST’s September 2026 round covered 14 Android products. Avast, Bitdefender and Kaspersky were each certified with full 6/6/6 marks for protection, performance and usability. In Bitdefender’s July 2026 report, it detected 100% of 3,041 real-time malware samples, against an industry average of 99.9%.
What does that mean for you? The gap between these apps is a fraction of a per cent. Pick on features and trust, not on lab bragging rights.
One honest opinion. These labs test known malicious APK files. They do not publish results for a specific scam like the RTO challan app. So my feature comparison later in this guide is based on what each app says it does.
Bitdefender Mobile Security: The All-Rounder
Bitdefender has the strongest lab record here and the richest feature list. The malware scanner checks installed apps, downloads and storage. App Anomaly Detection watches how apps behave and can flag one that acts maliciously before it is officially known as malware.
For scams, Scam Alert and Chat Protection scans links that arrive by text, messaging apps and notifications. That matters in India, where scams spread through WhatsApp and SMS. You also get web protection, App Lock, anti-theft (locate, lock, wipe), account breach alerts and smart call filtering for spam and scam numbers.
What I like: it covers almost every angle of mobile fraud in one app, and it stayed light on battery in AV-Comparatives’ test.
What annoys me: there is no proper free version, only a 14-day trial. The built-in VPN is capped at 200 MB a day, so treat it as a taste, not a solution. Also, we have experienced a heavy load on the system during scans.
In India, Bitdefender’s Android licence lists at ₹399 per device on Amazon, and sale prices have dipped far below that. You should note that some listings say the key only works with Indian IP addresses. Read the listing before you buy.
Bitdefender Mobile Security for a single Android phone is sold as a one-year licence on Amazon India, so check the current sale price before paying the full list price.
Protecting parents or kids too? A multi-device plan such as Bitdefender Total Security (available on Amazon) is worth comparing against buying separate phone licences.
Pick Bitdefender if you want the best all-round paid protection and do not mind paying a small yearly fee.
Avast: The Best Free Option, With Baggage
Avast’s Android app has over 430 million installs on Google Play. The free version gives you an antivirus engine, web protection, Wi-Fi security checks, a photo vault, a hack check and a junk cleaner. That is a lot for ₹0.
Paid upgrades (see on Amazon) add Scam Guardian Pro. It includes Call Guard, which blocks and labels scam calls, and Safe SMS, which uses AI to check text messages. You can also unlock App Lock and remove ads.
The ads are the real cost of free. They are not a security risk, but they are annoying on a daily-use app.
The privacy question. In February 2024, the US FTC announced a $16.5 million settlement with Avast. The FTC said Avast’s Jumpshot subsidiary sold browsing data collected through its software between 2014 and 2020.
The settlement was finalised in June 2024 and bans Avast from selling browsing data for advertising. Avast says it closed Jumpshot in January 2020 and does not sell consumer data today.
We understand that the problem was real, and the company paid for it. The order now limits what Avast can do. But if privacy is your top worry, this history will bother you, and that is a fair reaction.
Pick Avast if you want solid free protection and can tolerate ads.
Kaspersky: Top Scores, Tougher Trust Call
On pure engineering, Kaspersky is excellent. It scored 99.9% in AV-Comparatives’ mobile test and 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s September 2026 round.
Its feature list is practical. You get Safe Browsing, Safe Messaging for phishing links, a Secure QR Scanner, Weak Settings Scan, App Lock, Data Leak Checker and remote device tools.
The QR scanner is useful in India, where UPI QR fraud is common. Its Call Filter, though, only blocks numbers on a list you create. It does not label spam callers for you like Bitdefender or Avast’s paid plan.
Kaspersky sells its software in India through its Indian website. I could not find any Indian government ban on its consumer products. One India-specific limit is that Kaspersky has stopped selling its paid VPN in India, per its own support page.
The trust angle. In 2024, the US government banned sales of Kaspersky software, citing concerns about the company’s possible influence by Russian authorities.
Kaspersky denies this and runs a Global Transparency Initiative, which lets outsiders review its source code and data practices. No independent researcher has publicly proven a backdoor, but the doubt has not gone away.
Here is how I see it. If you work in government, defence or a sensitive sector, follow your employer’s rules and skip it. For a regular phone with banking apps, it is a personal call. If the geopolitics make you uneasy, Bitdefender is the easier choice.
If you do choose Kaspersky, buy from an authorised seller and activate the key inside the app. One-year Android licences are listed on Amazon India.
Pick Kaspersky if you value top detection and QR scanning, and you are comfortable with the company’s background.
Which App Handles Indian Scams Better?
Indian fraud on Android mostly comes through links, fake apps and phone calls. Here is how the three line up on those fronts, based on their listed features.
- Links in SMS and chat apps: Bitdefender scans texts, messaging apps and notifications. Kaspersky’s Safe Messaging checks incoming messages for phishing links. Avast’s Safe SMS sits in the paid plan.
- Scam calls: Bitdefender and Avast Premium label and block suspicious numbers. Kaspersky relies on your own block list.
- Fake QR codes: Only Kaspersky lists a dedicated QR scanner.
- Suspicious app behaviour: Bitdefender’s App Anomaly Detection is the standout.
None of them can stop you from tapping Install and granting permissions. That is the weak point of every security app.
What to Do If You Installed a Fake Challan or Wedding APK
- Cut the connection. Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi.
- Stop using banking and UPI apps on that phone.
- Use another device to change passwords and your UPI PIN.
- Call your bank and ask to block cards and UPI access.
- Report it to the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 and at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Remove the app or factory reset the phone once your accounts are safe.
Myth vs Fact
- Myth: Free antivirus apps sell your data. Fact: Avast did sell browsing data through Jumpshot until 2020 and was fined. Today it says it does not, and the FTC order restricts it. Do not assume every free app is the same.
- Myth: Kaspersky is banned in India. Fact: I found no Indian ban. The 2024 ban was a US decision.
- Myth: Antivirus apps drain your battery. Fact: AV-Comparatives found only a minor battery impact for all three.
- Myth: If I have an antivirus, I cannot be scammed. Fact: Most UPI and OTP fraud works by fooling you. No app fixes that.
Battery, Speed and Budget Phones
If you use a budget phone with 4 GB RAM or less, performance matters. The labs rate all three as light. Still, real phones vary, and Bitdefender’s scans can feel heavy on weaker hardware.
Run full scans while the phone is charging and idle. Turn off extras you never use. Our guide to speeding up an Android phone covers the rest.
Pricing in India
Prices change often and vary by seller, so treat these as a starting point.
| App | Indicative India price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Mobile Security (1 device, 1 year) | Check the List price on Amazon; sales are often lower | Check that the listing is for India |
| Avast Mobile Security | Free; paid upgrades vary | Ads in the free version |
| Kaspersky Premium | Check the List price on Amazon; sales are often lower | Compare the price on the Kaspersky website also |
Which One Should You Choose?
- Choose Bitdefender if you bank on your phone, want scam protection in chats and calls, and prefer one reliable paid app.
- Choose Avast if you want free protection and do not mind ads.
- Choose Kaspersky if you want top detection plus a QR scanner and accept the trust trade-off.
- Skip all three if you only install from Google Play, keep the phone updated, and never sideload. Play Protect plus careful habits may be enough.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running two antivirus apps at once. They fight each other.
- Granting Accessibility permission to any app that asks. Security apps need it for link scanning, but malware abuses the same permission. Install only from the official Play Store listing.
- Buying keys from unknown sellers. Region-locked or reused keys stop working.
- Trusting a clean scan over common sense. A file ending in .apk on WhatsApp is a red flag, whatever your app says.
Warning Signs Your Android May Be Infected
- Battery drains fast, or the phone runs hot
- Mobile data usage jumps for no reason
- Apps appear that you did not install
- OTPs go missing, or calls get forwarded without your input
- Pop-up ads show up outside any app
Troubleshooting
- The app keeps stopping in the background. On Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo and similar phones, set the app to no battery restriction and allow autostart.
- Paid features are locked. Sign in with the same account you used to activate the key. Check the key’s region.
- A threat is found but will not delete. Restart in Safe Mode, remove the app’s device-admin rights, then uninstall it.
- The phone feels slower after installing. Turn off scheduled scans and run them while charging.
Expert Tips
- Never install an APK sent over WhatsApp, SMS or Telegram. Check challans only at parivahan.gov.in or the official mParivahan app from the Play Store.
- Keep Play Protect switched on. It works alongside any of these apps.
- Use a PIN lock on your SIM. Read how in our SIM lock guide.
- Protect your Google and email accounts with a hardware security key such as a YubiKey, which adds protection no antivirus can. These are sold on Amazon India.
- Lock WhatsApp with a fingerprint. See how to secure WhatsApp chats.
Final Verdict
For most Indian Android users who want one dependable paid app, I would pick Bitdefender. It tied for the top lab scores and covers scams, anti-theft and suspicious apps in one place.
If you want free, Avast is the sensible pick, as long as you accept ads and its past privacy issues.
Kaspersky is technically superb, but the trust question is yours to settle.
Whichever you choose, the best defence is simple. Do not install files from chats, and never share an OTP.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most people, Bitdefender is the best paid all-rounder. Avast is better if you want a free app. Kaspersky has excellent detection and a QR scanner, but its Russian origins make it a harder trust decision.
I could not find any Indian government ban on Kaspersky’s consumer products, and the company sells in India through its Indian website. The 2024 sales ban was a US decision. Rules can change, so check current news before buying.
Technically, its protection is top-class, with 99.9% in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 mobile test. The open question is trust. The US cited concerns about Russian influence, which Kaspersky denies. Decide based on your comfort level and your job.
Avast paid $16.5 million to settle FTC charges over selling browsing data between 2014 and 2020. The order now bans such sales for advertising. Avast says it closed Jumpshot in 2020 and does not sell consumer data today.
No. Bitdefender Mobile Security offers a 14-day free trial, then requires a paid licence. There is no ongoing free tier.
Yes. The free version includes malware scanning, web protection and Wi-Fi checks, but it shows ads. Scam call blocking, App Lock, and ad removal require a paid plan.
All three are excellent. AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test gave Bitdefender 100%, Kaspersky 99.9% and Avast 99.6%. AV-TEST gave all three full marks in September 2026.
AV-Comparatives found only a minor battery impact for all three. In real use, results vary by phone. Run scans while charging to avoid noticing any drain.
Play Protect is a good base, and in India it also blocks some risky sideloaded installs. A security app adds scam link scanning, call blocking, anti-theft and extra checks. It matters most if you sideload apps or do a lot of banking on your phone.
It can help by flagging a known malicious file or a phishing link. But it cannot stop you from installing and approving an app. The safest rule is never to install an APK sent through WhatsApp, SMS or Telegram.
Bitdefender includes smart call filtering for spam and scam numbers, and Avast’s paid Scam Guardian Pro has Call Guard. Kaspersky’s Call Filter only blocks numbers you add yourself.
No. Bitdefender’s VPN is capped at 200 MB a day. Avast’s VPN is a paid add-on. Kaspersky includes a limited VPN, and its paid VPN is not sold in India.
It is not recommended. Two real-time scanners can conflict, slow the phone and cause crashes. Pick one and keep Google Play Protect on.
The list price on Amazon India is ₹399 per device for one year (as of today), and sale prices have been much lower. Check that the listing is for India before you buy.
All three are rated as light by the labs. Avast’s free app is the easiest to try on a budget phone. On very low-RAM devices, run scans only while charging.
It can warn you about phishing links and fake apps. It cannot stop social engineering, such as a caller asking for your PIN or OTP. Never share either with anyone.
Bitdefender is a good fit because it scans links in messages and filters scam calls. Pair it with a simple rule for them: do not install apps from chats, and call you before paying anything.
Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, stop using banking apps, change passwords from another device and call your bank. Report it to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in, then remove the app or factory reset the phone.
