Easy Passport Process to Submit New Passport Application Online?

In this tutorial, we would like to describe how to apply for a passport in India.

Online new passport application in India includes a primary process of booking a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or passport centre appointment by logging into the Passport Seva Portal (PSP).

The passport application process is simple: just complete and submit the online passport application form and pay the online passport fees.

Then you will need to print the ARN receipt and visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) on the scheduled date to process your application.

Your passport appointment with PSK has been scheduled, but only once you have paid the required online passport application fees.

Here we are detailing the process of an online new passport application process and online passport application fee payment.

You have to follow the same online passport process for passport renewal too.

Passport charges are also the same for both new applications and renewals. You can easily complete the passport application process by following the passport procedure steps outlined below.

1) Register and Login Online Passport Application Portal

You will notice a screen on the site’s home page as shown below.

  • If you are an existing user, you can log in by clicking ‘ Existing User Login ‘ with your user ID and password ( if it is valid )
  • You will need to do ‘ New User Registration ‘ to generate a user ID and password to access the site if you are a first-time user.

Follow this passport application procedure steps to register:

  • Click on ‘New Registration‘ 
  • To fill in the information on the identification, you will be directed to the user registration page. Some areas are compulsory and will need to be filled in, and labelled with an Asterix.
  • You will have to choose where to register in the first field, i.e. either at the CPV Delhi or at the passport office. (CPV is for diplomatic/official passports, but these passports can also be applied through the respective PSK)
  • Based on the address of your present residence, the regional passport office applies to you. (Tibetan refugees must select ‘Delhi Passport Office’ for a certificate of identity.)
  • The other fields have to be filled with your name (limited to 35 characters), birth date, and email ID.
  • You can select the same login ID as your email ID.
  • You also have a choice to use a separate login ID in your interest.
  • Decide the password and confirm.
  • Provide a hint of the question and its answer ( if you forget your login credentials, this question will be answered to retrieve online passport application login details).
  • Finally, enter the displayed code and hit the bottom-right corner of the page’s register. ‘

2) Select the Application Category

  • Logging in will give you access to the site, which will take you to the applicant’s page.

You can choose the application category here from the following list.

  • Fresh passport / Passport Reissue
  • Diplomatic passport / official passport
  • Police clearance certificate (PCC)
  • Identity Certificate

Clicking on the ‘ Applicant Home ‘ page to ‘ Apply for Fresh / Reissue of the Passport ‘ will bring you to the next phase of the process fill out the application form.

3) Fill in the Online Passport Application form

There are two methods you can fill in the application form, viz. Online or offline.

Offline: Fill out and upload the form offline.

  • Click on the link given for the online passport application form download PDF format if you choose to fill in the form offline. (Note – version 9 or above of Acrobat Reader is needed)
  • You will be taken to the ‘ Download e-Form ‘ page. For each of the following, a link is provided to an electronic form.
    • Fresh/reissue
    • Police Clearance Certificate
    • Diplomatic/Official
    • Identity Certificate
  • To open/download the e-form, click on the suitable link.
  • Fill out the e-form of the application
  • Click the ‘ Upload e-form ‘ link and upload/submit the submission filled in.

( Passport application form PDF is a quicker way to complete the form and no internet connection is required.)

Online: Fill in the online passport application form without downloading/uploading it.

  • Click on the link given to fill out the online passport application form if you want to a passport application form online registration.
  • You are going to the ‘ Passport Type ‘ section.
  • You have to choose between the following
    • Fresh or a reissue
    • Normal or Tatkal
    • 36-page or 60-page booklet
  • The validity of 10 years or up to 18 years of age or not applicable – Choose ‘not applicable’ if you are a candidate over 18 years of age; choose 10 years or up to 18 years of age if the applicant is a minor between 15 and 18 years of age period.
  • Click on the icon ‘ Next ‘ at the right bottom
  • This will bring you to the various parts of the application to be filled out. These segments are in the left navigation bar on the left side of the page. These parts are the Type of Passport (present page), Applicant Details, Family Details, Present Address, Present Address 1, Present Address 2, Reference, Previous Passport, Other Details, and Self Declaration.
  • Submit the completed form.

In your application form, you needed to provide real and complete information.

4) Schedule the Visit At Passport Seva Center and pay online passport application fees

  • You will then have to schedule an appointment to visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) where you must present yourself. You can find the PSK on the portal for your region.
  • Go to the ‘ Applicant Home ‘ page and click ‘ View Saved / Submitted Applications ‘
  • This will show a page detailing the application form you have previously submitted. The ARN, File No., Applicant Name, Appointment Date, and Submission Number are displayed in tabular form.
  • Select the form ARN that you just filled out.
  • There are different choices in the table, viz.
  • Retrieve the partially filled form
  • Pay and Schedule Appointment
  • Print Application Receipt
  • View/Print Submitted Form
  • Track Application Status
  • Track Payment Status
  • Payment Receipt
  • Upload Supporting Passport Documents
  • Appointment History

Passport Charges Payment

  • Click ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment
  • This starts the process of your passport fee payment. It starts with ‘Choose your payment method ‘. You can choose between two methods of payment, viz.
  • Online Payment – This is for Internet Banking (SBI) payments or card payments.
  • Challan Payment – This is for direct payment, i.e. to pay cash to any SBI branch or to pay cash as a walk-in to a PSK.

Note:– All PSKs require online passport application fee payment for booking appointments.

In Tatkal appointments, the passport fee payable to book the appointment is the same as for normal appointments.

Once the appointment is effectively verified, the balance of Tatkal’s passport fees will have to be paid in money at the PSK.

  • The next step is to book the passport appointment once payment has been made
  • If you decide to pay online, you can immediately book the appointment.

  • If you choose cash/challan payment
  • Take the challan given to a branch of the SBI and pay in the money the amount needed. This is to be fulfilled after generating challan for at least 3 hours.
  • The challan is valid from a generation day for only 85 days.
  • Collect a copy of the challan from the recipient bank.
  • The bank will then take 2 days to check the challan for your ARN information.
  • On the post-verification page, a valid payment will be presented where you can ‘ ‘track the payment status. ‘ Alternatively, you will be sent an email update.
  • You can ‘ Schedule the appointment ‘ on successful payment, either online or in cash.
  • This page indicates the dates available under the appropriate Regional Passport Office (RPO) for PSK appointments.
  • It also displays the reference number of your application (ARN)
  • Choose a PSK based on the date available
  • Enter the code displayed and click on the ‘ Next ‘ icon.
  • Select the normal appointment or Tatkal appointment depending upon your type of application.
  • Then you’ll have to ‘Pay and Book the Appointment’.
  • In this section, you will find details of your application, including your Application Reference Number (ARN), your name, what you are applying for, the amount to be paid, and your contact number. It also shows the date of the appointment.
  • Make sure all the data is correct then click on the icon in the upper right corner for the payment and reservation of the appointment.

You can use the Passport Fee Calculator tool to determine the fee payable on the type of implementation that is available on the portal.

Note – Diplomatic / Official Passport Applications are not charged

Online Passport Application Fees Payment Process

  • In the next step, you can make the payment through the gateway which is the SBI Multi Option Payment System (MOPS).
  • Select your method of payment i.e. Net Banking (SBI and associates) or Card Payment (cash payments are to be made at the SBI branch).
  • If the payment system is not working, after a while you may attempt again.
  • If there is a hitch in the system that charges the passport fee without successfully processing your payment online
  • Go to the ‘Applicant Home page
  • Click on ‘Track Payment Status

You will your passport payment status here. You can continue to obtain a confirmation of the appointment if effectively processed.

However, a failed payment will be stated if it has not been processed. In this case, your account will be reimbursed within 7 days for the amount charged, otherwise, contact the passport Seva helpline at 1800-258-1800 (Toll-Free).

You can also contact Passport Seva customer care through the ‘feedback‘ section on the home page.

Note – There will be no refunds once payment is made

  • You will obtain an ‘ Appointment Confirmation ‘ and an Appointment Number (once payment is made, do not pay again) upon effective completion of the payment.
  • This page shows information about the appointment such as Application Reference Number (ARN), name, date of birth, what you have applied, quota assignment i.e. Normal or tatkal, the PSK you have chosen, your passport application Appointment Date, Time and Passport Appointment ID (the number is shown at the top of the page)
  • Click at the bottom right corner on ‘ Print Application Receipt ‘

5) Print the ARN Receipt of the Online Passport Application

  • The ‘ Print Application Receipt ‘ page provides your application details
    • Applicant Details-ARN, type of application, name, location, date of birth, gender and marital status, type of job, father name, present address.
    • References – First details of a reference, second details of reference (these are alphabetical codes)
    • Payment Details – Total fee, payment fee, payment date and time, and the payment ID.
    • Appointment Details – PSK location and address, passport appointment date and time, appointment ID and reporting time
  • Review this information and click at the bottom correct corner on ‘Print Application Receipt ‘
  • The final stage in this process is the ‘Passport Application Receipt ‘ display. This is evidence that the online application process for the passport is complete.
  • The receipt includes information about the applicant, references of the applicant, details of the payment, and details of the appointment as indicated in the earlier step.
  • It also includes a Batch, Sequence No., and Reporting Time tabular display. Applicants are called to the PSK based on sequential batches and appointments.
  • In the top and bottom right corners, there are two bar codes.

You should be careful about the following points at the bottom of the receipt.

  • Documents required for Passport, i.e. one set of originals and one set of authenticated photocopies (parents can certify copies of their minor). As your photo will be taken at the PSK, you don’t need to take any photograph copies. Only candidates under the age of 4 will be required to bring the latest photograph–colour with white background, size 4.5 X 3.5 cm.
  • Make sure that you are at the PSK before the time of reporting when a token will be issued. Before issuing the token, documents will be checked. However, you won’t get a token if you arrive after the mentioned reporting time.
  • The applicant, for the passport slot booking, is to enter the PSK alone; except for minors, senior citizens, and disabled and illiterate individuals who may be accompanied by one member of the family.
  • Do not carry electronic products, including cameras, and dangerous objects or substances that are not permitted within the PSK.
  • Be conscious of the details of the online passport application fees as payment will not be refunded.

You can finish the process by pressing the icon at the bottom of the page to ‘Print the Application Receipt‘.

Click the ‘ Close ‘ icon at the bottom of the page once the application receipt has been printed.

Note – When you go to the PSK for an appointment, you must take the Application Receipt / ARN Receipt.

Cancel or Reschedule passport appointment

  • You should either reschedule or cancel your passport appointment at PSK as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the appointment.
  • You will get the ‘Reschedule Appointment‘ option from the passport Seva portal after logging in.
  • If you reschedule or cancel the appointment, the fee will not be refunded. It is not possible to transfer the amount paid for the cancelled / original appointment to process a fresh appointment. It is going to involve a new payment.
  • However, if there are multiple payments for the same appointment/application/ARN, the RPO will reimburse the excess amount.
  • Within one year, i.e. from the date of the initial appointment, you can reschedule your passport appointment twice.
  • You can’t reschedule a passport appointment missed.  In this situation, to set up a fresh reservation, you will have to repeat the process from the start.

You will be able to track your passport status, which means, online passport application status from the Passport Seva portal itself.

Passport Seva status will be updated regularly on the submission of the form.

How To Apply Online For a Diplomatic Passport/Official Passport

Provide official passports for those individuals travelling abroad on official state business. This document enables people under government protection to travel abroad.

Diplomatic passports are given to consuls and diplomats appointed overseas on behalf of the state. These documents can also be used as evidence of address and identity.

The following guidelines will assist guide people who wish to apply online for an official or diplomatic passport:

  1. Applicants must visit the Passport Seva Kendra official website or passport-providing centres in India.
  2. You will need to register on the online portal of Passport Seva.
  3. They will then receive an ID, which will have to be used to log in to the online portal of Passport Seva.
  4. Applicants must then press the “Apply for Diplomatic / Official Passport” link.
  5. You will need to download, fill in and submit the necessary form along with the documentary evidence needed.
  6. Take a printout of the finished application through the link ‘ View / Print Submitted Form, ‘ which can be found on the page ‘ View Saved / Submitted Applications. ‘
  7. Send this printed copy of the online application form to the Consular Passport and Visa Division, Patiala House in New Delhi Passport Office along with the necessary original documents, attached to the current address and submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we apply for a passport anywhere in India?

You may apply for a passport from any location in India. An applicant will be able to submit his or her application at the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). This applies regardless of the applicant’s permanent living address.

How to edit a passport application after payment?

Once you’ve paid, you won’t be able to update your passport application online. When you arrive at the passport office on the scheduled day, you will be issued a token at the registration counter. There your biometrics will be captured. If you ask them to correct any entries, they will do so.

How to download a passport online?

Because there is no online version of the passport, it cannot be downloaded. However, you may upload scanned versions of passports to Digilocker or any other safe cloud storage platform and download them as needed. DigiLocker is a platform provided by the Government of India through which citizens may save and exchange digital documents at any time and from any location.
